Here are some statistics about the US and Massachusetts foreclosure markets since the onset of the recession in December 2007:

Peak year of US foreclosure filings: 2.9 million in 2010

Peak month of US homes in some stage of foreclosure: 2.2 million in December 2010

Peak quarter of US foreclosure sales: 212,926 in first quarter of 2008

US foreclosure sales in second quarter of 2012: 170,040

Massachusetts foreclosure filings from January to September of 2012: 13,582
