Shaw’s is closing six locations

Shaw’s supermarket chain announced that it will close six stores in the next month.

The company said it plans to shutter grocery stores in Fall River, Fairhaven, Stoughton, and Taunton in Massachusetts and two Rhode Island stores, in Westerly and Woonsocket, by Aug. 3.

“The stores identified have not been profitable for quite some time, and despite the best efforts of the company and our associates, we have not been able to reposition them to better compete in the marketplace and don’t anticipate being able to change this trend,” the company said in a press release issued Monday evening.

Shaw’s and Star Market are headquartered in West Bridgewater and owned by Cerberus Capital Management LP. The New England chains operate 155 Shaw’s and 14 Star Market stores. The stores that are closing are under the Shaw’s name.

Also on Monday, the Massachusetts Division of Standards said that it has fined the Shaw’s chain a total of $8,000 after finding some stores were not following the Commonwealth’s item-pricing law.

The division said its surveyors found that three of the four Shaw’s supermarkets visited during a survey of popular barbecue items failed to individually item-price a majority of their grocery items, in violation of state law.

In a statement, Shaw’s said: “Ensuring that all Massachusetts Shaw’s and Star Market locations comply with item pricing laws is of the highest priority, and we strive for 100 percent compliance.”
