NStar seeks gas rate change

NStar, a Boston-based utility with about 300,000 gas customers in Eastern and Central Massachusetts, said Monday that it has asked state regulators to approve a rate change that would save NStar gas customers about $4 a month, starting Sept. 1.

NStar’s request needs approval from the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities.

If the new rate is granted, NStar gas customers would pay about 39 cents per therm, down from the current price of nearly 53 cents. Customers using an average of 29 therms a month are getting a monthly bill of about $44. NStar projects that the new rate, if approved, would cut that bill to about $40 a month.

Besides gas customers, NStar has more than 1 million electric customers in Massachusetts.
