Stocks mostly rose, on news that the number of people seeking unemployment benefits fell last week to a three-month low. The S&P 500 set a record high for a third time this week. Staples fell the most of any stock in the index, 15.3%; it’s about to close a tenth of its stores. Nearly half of its sales are now online.
