Raytheon wins $130m contract for Mass. Pike tolls
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation has awarded Raytheon Co. a $130 million contract that calls for Raytheon and its partners to install all-electronic tolling systems for the Massachusetts Turnpike as well as for the Sumner/Callahan and Ted Williams tunnels, Raytheon said Wednesday.
When this project is completed, drivers will be able to pass through the toll stations at highway speeds without the need to slow down or stop, Waltham-based Raytheon said in a press release.
After several months of testing, the system should go live in the summer of 2016, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation said.
Vehicles equipped with existing E-ZPass transponders will work on the new all-electronic tolling system, or AETS. The system will perform image-based tolling at highway speeds on non EZ-Pass vehicles and send a toll invoice to the registered owner of the vehicle, Raytheon added.
Last month, a similar tolling system went into operation on the Maurice J. Tobin Memorial Bridge. The installation of that project was performed by TransCore under an existing contract with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, a department spokeswoman said.
Meanwhile, Raytheon is scheduled to begin work on the MassPike and the tunnels in April. The first phase of the project will be the conversion of the Weston/Route 128 Interchange, the company said.
“Raytheon has developed and installed all-electronic tolling systems along highways throughout the world,” Raytheon vice president Bob Delorge said in a statement. “Hundreds of thousands of drivers will benefit from faster toll booth transactions and fewer lane closures, including thousands of Massachusetts-based Raytheon employees.”
Raytheon is perhaps best known as a defense contractor, but its work with sensors and systems design has made it well suited to develop electronic tolling systems. The company said it installed its first all-electronic tolling system on the 407 Express Toll Route in Toronto, Canada, in 1997.
Besides Raytheon, the team for the Massachusetts project includes SPS New England of Salisbury, CDM Smith of Cambridge, and Liddell Brothers of Halifax.
