Legal Sea Foods will close its 20-year-old Prudential Center restaurant at the end of the year.

The company said all 144 workers will be transferred to other restaurants. The establishment is slated to close Dec. 28, when its lease expires.

Boston Properties Inc. is redeveloping the 23-acre Prudential Center complex to add a 17-story office building with about 422,000 square feet of space.

Legal Sea Foods said its current site was redesignated for a retail business, instead of a restaurant, because of the project. Legal is in talks with Boston Properties to open a 9,000-square-foot restaurant in the new tower when construction concludes in 2016.

The company had unsuccessfully tried to find a temporary location in the complex during the construction phase.
