Office supply chain up on reported stake

Framingham-based office supply company Staples Inc. jumped after activist investor Starboard Value Investment disclosed a 5.1 percent stake and increased its holding in rival Office Depot to 9.9 percent, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal. The move could add pressure on the two retailers to merge, but analysts said a merger could face challenges and leave the industry with just one major chain. A spokesman for Staples declined to comment on Starboard's stake, the Journal reported.
