Roche Bros. Supermarkets plans to open the doors of its new grocery store in Downtown Crossing on April 29.
The 25,000-square-foot flagship store will feature grab-and-go items like pre-packaged sushi and sandwiches, and several hot and cold food bars in a small space on the ground floor. It will also have an outdoor fruit stand.
A lower level, which formerly housed Filene’s Basement, will feature a traditional grocery store with a bakery, deli, specialty cheeses, meats and fresh seafood. Roche Bros., headquartered in Wellesley, says it’s the first-ever full service supermarket in Downtown Crossing.
“Our goal is to provide a complete grocery store for the residents of the area,” said Paul McGillivray, vice president of sales and merchandising for Roche Bros. “There’s also a huge daytime population in the area and the needs of that consumer are at lunch and to pick up things on their way home.”
The chain, which operates 21 supermarkets in Massachusetts, said it is seeking approval to offer public seating for 30 at tables and chairs along Summer Street. Future plans call for an additional 10,000 square feet on the lower level for more grocery items and a wine and beer store, slated to open in late 2016.
The supermarket will operate from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday. Roche Bros. said the store will employ about 70 full-time and 200 part-time workers.
