Biotechnology giant Amgen Inc. has begun hiring more research scientists and production engineers in a 100-person expansion of its office in Cambridge’s Kendall Square.
The company, based in Thousand Oaks, Calif., said in a regulatory filing Monday that its move was part of a broader effort to increase its footprint in two biotechnology hubs: Cambridge and South San Francisco, Calif. While the filing didn’t specify the company’s plans, officials said the hires in Cambridge will work in research and manufacturing process development.
Amgen has hired about 25 people since the start of the year at its Kendall Square site, where it is renovating space to accommodate the expansion, company officials said. It expects to hire another 75 by the end of the year, bringing its total workforce in Cambridge to about 275.
The company has another 70 employees at a small manufacturing site in Woburn, where it makes an experimental drug used in clinical trials, and about 640 employees at a large plant in West Greenwich, R.I., where it makes its flagship drug Enbrel for rheumatoid arthritis.
