Nantucket’s Island Airlines shuts down

Nantucket’s Island Airlines and Cape and Islands Air Freight are shutting down operations immediately.

A message on the Island Airlines website Friday said “it is with great sadness that we are forced to announce that Island Airlines and Cape & Islands Air Freight will be closing it’s [sic] doors effective immediately.”

The airlines served Nantucket for over 24 years, according to the message. Cape and Islands Air Freight is a division of Island Airlines that offered freight service to and from Hyannis and Nantucket, according to the Island Airlines website.

Cape & Islands Air Freight did not immediately return a request for comment, and Nantucket Memorial Airport’s manager was not available for comment.

Island Airlines tweeted Friday morning that all flights at Barnstable Municipal Airport in Hyannis and Nantucket Memorial Airport were canceled for the remainder of the day due to fog.

CapeCod.com first reported the news.

Island Airlines was responsible for 49,171 of Nantucket Memorial Airport’s 164,290 commercial operations from July 2014 to June 2015, according to The Inquirer and Mirror.
