HubSpot expands across the pond

HubSpot isn’t fretting about all the juicy details about company that will be made public when Dan Lyon’s new book, Disrupted, drops on Tuesday. Nope, they’re too busy being focused on their global expansion.

On Monday, HubSpot staffers raised a toast to their new office space in Dublin, Ireland, which will play host to an additional 320 new hires who will be targeting Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Naturally, the space has its own on-site pub, and in a nod to its local roots, employees will now be able to take meetings on a conference room table hewn from authentic Irish whiskey barrels.

“It does not necessarily mean that you’ll be consuming whiskey at the meetings,” JD Sherman, the company’s president and chief operating officer, joked in a phone call from across the pond.

It’s the second Irish outpost for the Cambridge-based inbound marketing firm, which first set up shop in Dublin three years ago. The new, 36,000-square foot office is in the city’s “Silicon Docks” along the River Liffey, where Facebook and Google have also taken up residence.

It’s all part of the company’s global expansion, said Christian Kinnear, the director of sales for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Until two or three years ago, HubSpot only served English-speaking markets, he said, but they’re now aggressively moving on many international fronts. The company also has offices in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Sydney, Australia, and Singapore, and has plans to expand into Japan later this year.

It was that diversity, paired with the company’s unique corporate culture, which convinced Kinnear to depart Google and join the Hubspot team last October. “I was already aware of Hubspot, its name was popping up on every search,” he said (which says a lot, coming from a Google guy). “I realized it was a phenomenal marketing opportunity and a chance to understand where their business is growing.”

HubSpot is likely hoping that all those clinking glasses will drown out the buzz surrounding the drop of Disrupted, the new book from Winchester-based author and journalist Dan Lyons, which was released on Tuesday. Lyons used his gig at the company as fodder for his corporate takedown; internal efforts to gain early copies of the book resulted in the firing of the company’s chief marketing officer, the resignation of its vice president, and its chief executive, Brian Halligan being fined by the company’s board.

Lyon’s publisher will be feteing the author’s book at an event at Empire in the Seaport on Thursday night. Hubspot was mum on whether they had plans to acknowledge the book’s release.

“We’ve shared all the comments we’re going to share,” said its spokeswoman, Laura Moran. “Until we have full context we’re not going to say anything else.”
