Massachusetts public health officials on Wednesday approved a $180 million expansion and renovation project at North Shore Medical Center, a Partners HealthCare-owned hospital based in Salem.
Plans call for the construction of a three-story building to house a new emergency department and dozens of new medical and surgical patient rooms. Partners also plans to convert a nearby rehabilitation facility into a psychiatric care facility.
The state's Public Health Council unanimously approved the plans.
Partners' broader plans for the area include the closing of North Shore Medical Center's Lynn campus, which is opposed by many in the community. That plan is still pending state approval. Partners has not yet set a closing date for the Lynn hospital.
