EnerNOC gets ConEd contract for Brooklyn, Queens

Boston-based EnerNOC Inc. said it was awarded a multimillion-dollar contract to help Consolidated Edison Co. of New York reduce electricity use in Brooklyn and Queens, part of the utility’s effort to avoid having to build a $1.2 billion substation.

The ConEd project tries to manage power consumption in the boroughs with several measures, including installation of industrial batteries that can store electricity and incentive programs that persuade customers to consume less power.

Most of EnerNOC’s revenue comes from payments it collects for helping utilities and power grid operators reduce their customers’ electricity use. The company has been trying to increase its sales of industrial software, a business that represented less than 20 percent of the company’s $186 million in sales during the first half of this year.
