Next day delivery is so last week.
Amazon customers in the Boston area can soon pick up certain items within minutes using a new instant pickup service the company is opening on Commonwealth Avenue near the campus of Boston University. The so-called Instant Pickup location at 870 Commonwealth Ave. is the first of Amazon’s new concepts in the Boston area, spokeswoman Carly Golden said.
A bit like a convenience store, Amazon said the new Instant Pickup locations will have a selection of “need-it-now items” such as food, cold drinks, personal care items, and technology essentials. Orders will be available inside store lockers within two minutes of ordering, Amazon said.

The Instant Pickup outlets are the latest effort by the e-commerce company to expand its physical presence around the country, with bookstores and other pickup storefronts. The first Instant Pickups were opened on or near college campuses in Los Angeles; Atlanta; Berkeley, Calif.; Columbus, Ohio; and College Park, Md.
Amazon did not say when the Boston location would open, but the company is expected to add other Instant Pickup locations around the country.
