WeWork planning to expand again in Boston

WeWork is getting bigger in Boston.

The co-working giant said Friday that it plans to open a new location at One Beacon Street, its sixth site in Boston and Cambridge. WeWork will take two floors in the Beacon Hill office tower — about 60,000 square feet — and open in March.

“One Beacon is a beautiful building,” said general manager Dave McLaughlin. ”We couldn’t be happier with it.”

The company, which rents desks and office space on a short-term basis to freelancers and small companies, has been on a growth spurt in Boston, as well as a variety of other cities. Over the last year, it has added locations in Back Bay and Cambridge’s Central Square to its original sites in the Leather District and Fort Point. WeWork is also building out an office near North Station that will open early next year.

One Beacon is WeWork’s first foray into an office tower in Boston. It’ll occupy the 14th and 15th floors of the 37-story tower. Most of its other locations are one the lower floors of shorter buildings.

The move reflects a broader shift underway in the city’s office market, as law and financial services firms that have typically filled Financial District skyscrapers look more to lower floors and emerging neighborhoods such as the Seaport. Indeed, as WeWork moves in to One Beacon next year, longtime tenant Boston Consulting Group will be moving out, taking the bulk of a new, shorter, office building on Pier 4.
