Making way for a tower

Demolition work continued into the night at the Winthrop Square Parking Garage.Jim Davis/Globe Staff

The Winthrop Square Garage is no more.

Demolition crews have been knocking down the shuttered Financial District garage at night over the last few weeks, readying the site for a skyscraper set to rise in its place.

Millennium Partners is paying to raze the garage — considered an architectural eyesore by many people — as part of its agreement with the Boston Planning & Development Agency to buy the property and build a 725-foot-tall office and condominium tower on the parcel. It hopes to break ground on the project next year.
