If your dream job involves working from home with a view of the mountains, you’re in luck.
Under a new program signed into law last week, Vermont will pay some workers up to $10,000 to move there and work remotely for an out-of-state company.
To qualify, workers must be employed full time with a company based outside Vermont, and move to the Green Mountain State on or after January 1, 2019. The worker must also perform most duties from a Vermont home office or co-working space. The state will then issue grants to newly minted Vermonters up to $5,000 per year for two years for things like moving expenses, Internet access, or a computer.
The grants, which the law caps at $125,000 for 2019, will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
One of the bill’s sponsors, Senator Virginia Lyons, said the law was aimed at bringing new workers into the state who will become productive members of their communities. Lyons also said she hopes to retain college students who might leave for jobs after graduation.
“This looks like an opportunity for us to bring people into the state who might not otherwise be here,” Lyons, a Democrat, told the Globe on Friday.
Lyons said the bill doesn’t target specific industries, but those who work in video gaming, travel, or software development could find the new program to be a good opportunity.
The new program comes as Vermont, like other rural states, faces an economy where high-paying jobs are increasingly found in expensive cities.
Vermont also faces an aging population, an issue that the state’s Republican governor highlighted in his State of the State address earlier this year.
Republican Phil Scott called on lawmakers to look for ways to attract and retain more young people.
Lyons said that while the new grant program wasn’t specifically designed with age in mind, “certainly having a younger population is a good thought.”
