After three years overseeing the city’s first year-round, locally sourced food hall at 100 Hanover St. across from City Hall, the operators of the Boston Public Market planned to announce Wednesday that they will open a second outpost of the marketplace next spring in Boston’s Logan Airport. It’s one of more than a dozen new concessions being introduced to the travel hub — including Kelly’s Roast Beef, Santarpio’s Pizza, Sullivan’s Castle Island, and Saloniki Greek — in an effort to give the airport more regional flavor.
The 6,000-square-foot marketplace will be in Terminal C, the base for JetBlue’s domestic flights, and feature at least six vendors from the flagship market. It will replace a current food court, and offer a selection of sit-down meals, grab-and-go items, a salad bar featuring local produce, and a market bar with craft beer and wines. Travelers will also be able to pick up regionally-made artisanal products as gifts and souvenirs.
“Since the Boston Public Market launched in 2015, we have been overwhelmed by the community’s positive response and we’ve surpassed initial foot traffic metrics,” said Cheryl Cronin, chief executive of the Boston Public Market, who reported that the market has seen over 6 million visitors since its opening three years ago. She said that having an airport site provides an obvious way to introduce the marketplace to millions more locals and guests, and that it may feature many of the same kinds of events, demos, and samples that are currently offered at the Hanover Street location.
New England Development’s airport development arm, MarketPlace, won the contract to operate the concessions in Logan airport’s four terminals in the spring of last year, saying at the time that they would seek to slot in local tenants wherever possible into the airport’s 160 stores, restaurants, and newsstands. In the ensuing months, they’ve been focused on partnering with iconic local institutions as a way to upgrade the passenger experience, said MarketPlace president Paul McGinn.
In addition to the Boston Public Market, Kelly’s, Santarpio’s, Sullivan’s, and Saloniki, MarketPlace has signed leases with Alta Strada, B.Good, Bruins Bar, Celtics Bar, Mija Cantina & Tequila Bar, Lucca Restaurant and Bar, Monument Restaurant and Tavern, Not Your Average Joe’s, Tico, and Trade, most of which will open in 2019. They will join an outpost of Stephanie’s, which opened in Terminal E earlier this year. Lucca and Kelly’s are both scheduled to open in Terminal B by the end of 2018.
“The airport is your first and last impression of the city,” McGinn said. “Expectations of the traveling public have gone up. It used to be that the notion of airport food was synonymous with something pretty shabby. But that’s no longer the case.”
In addition to the new restaurants, MarketPlace will also open the first New Balance retail store at Logan, and New England Collections will open two additional gift shops in the coming year.
“As a gateway to Massachusetts and beyond, it is important that we provide our passengers with a unique experience when they are at Logan,” said Massport spokeswoman Jennifer Mehigan. “Having local businesses throughout the terminals allows visitors to the area to see and taste a small part of what Boston and New England have to offer.”
Boston Public Market’s airport outpost will join a number of food halls scheduled to open in the city in 2019, including Time Out Market in the Fenway, High Street Place in the Financial District, and The Beat, which will operate out of the Boston Globe’s former headquarters on Morrissey Boulevard. Somerville’s Bow Market, a combined food hall and retail destination, also opened recently in Union Square.
