Google on Wednesday confirmed long-rumored plans that it will fill a new Kendall Square office tower, giving the company room to double its workforce here.
The tech giant said it will lease most of a 16-story tower on Main Street in Kendall Square on which construction will soon begin — on the site of the four-story office building the company currently occupies. Eventually, Google’s Cambridge workforce could grow to as many as 3,000, from its current 1,500.
“This new space will provide room for future growth and further cements our commitment to the Cambridge community,” said Brian Cusack, Google’s Cambridge site lead. “We’re proud to call this city home.”

Google acknowledged the lease for 362,000 square feet as part of an announcement Wednesday of $13 billion of investment in office buildings and data centers nationwide. It did not provide a timeline for adding jobs in Cambridge.
Developer Boston Properties, which owns the building at 325 Main St., has been pushing the expansion project through the final stages of permitting in recent months. Documents it filed with the city in January suggest a groundbreaking this spring, with an opening date scheduled for early 2022.
