Addition opens up a Braintree bungalow

21 Braemore Road, Braintree

Town tax records list this house as a bungalow. OK, that’s partly true. The bungalow is now the anchor for an expansive, gleaming home with vaulted ceilings, exposed beams, and a propane-fueled stove for Mario Batali admirers.

This built-out home on a quarter acre boasts an addition of more than 2,000 square feet, including an open floor plan encompassing the kitchen, dining room, and living room (with a stone fireplace and a pellet stove) and beamed ceilings 20 feet high in spots. A dormer that once held court in the attic throws natural light into the opened-up space. Now painted two shades of blue (there are five variations of this calming color in the home), the space connects to the kitchen, which comes with dark-granite counters, a large prep island with breakfast bar, wine refrigerator, maple cabinets, and a pantry. The first floor also offers a full bath, access to the 26-by-18-foot backyard deck via slider, and a mudroom (with built-ins) off the kitchen that connects to the new three-car garage.

A very wide set of oak stairs leads to the second floor, where the master suite draws sunlight from two large banks of windows and features recessed lighting and a big closet with built-in shelving. Relax in the master bath, which offers a deep triangular-shaped whirlpool tub, double sinks, and a separate shower.

Doors and a small sitting room separate the master from the children’s wing of the house, where three bedrooms radiate off a common hallway. Now used as a playroom, one of the bedrooms basks in the sunlight streaming in from large rectangles of glass crowned with a half-moon window — one of the main visual draws of the expanded home’s exterior.

The upstairs family bath offers a whimsical checkerboard ceramic-tile floor of yellow, white, and two shades of blue. Flooring throughout the rest of the home, however, is a light-stained oak. The laundry room is conveniently located on the second floor, and the basement includes 300 square feet of additional living space used as a family room.

As part of the renovations, the owners brought in 300 tons of clean fill to create the now-fenced-in backyard, which is flanked on three sides by Cranberry Pond conservation land.

Brian DApice of Keller Williams Realty in Beverly is the listing broker.
