Cultivating a collection

Want to immerse yourself in the world of wine? Perhaps collect a few special bottles here and there? Marie Keep, director of fine wines at Skinner, has a few suggestions to get you started.

1. Read ‘The Wine Bible’ by Karen MacNeil. “I always have it on hand. It’s packed with information and a joy to read. Also, the absorbing autobiography of winemaker Kermit Lynch, ‘Adventures on the Wine Route: A Wine Buyer’s Tour of France.’ ”

2. Pay attention to vintages. “In the auction world, our hearts beat a little faster when we come across 1959, 1961, 1982, 1989, 1990, 2000 Bordeaux; and 1974, 1994, and 1997 Napa Cabernet Sauvignons.”


3. A can’t-miss vineyard? “For someone just getting oriented to the world of wine, a producer with great breadth is Louis Jadot in Burgundy. When the cooler weather kicks in, my go-to wines are vibrant reds from either Burgundy’s Cote de Beaune village of Pommard or Beaujolais.”

4. Storage conditions are important. “The kitchen is the worst place to keep wine because the temperature fluctuates so much. And bottles shouldn’t be standing up or subject to direct sunlight.”

5. Check out an app called Delectable. “That’s great for getting information about different wines and creating an archive of your favorites.”
