Donnie Walhberg has a message for “the haters.”
The Dorchester native spoke out in defense of Gisele Bündchen Wednesday night after Bündchen was criticized for some of the Super Bowl postgame remarks she made to her children.
“Since I was there, and the haters weren’t, I thought I’d ‘let’ them know what really happened,” Wahlberg tweeted. “You’re a great mom @giseleofficial!”
His usage of quotation marks around the word “let” is referencing one of the circulating comments Bündchen reportedly said to comfort her crying son and daughter after the Patriots’ loss: “Sometimes you have to let other people win.”
While some are condemning Bündchen for setting a poor example of sportsmanship, Walhberg — speaking to his wife, Jenny McCarthy, on SiriusXM Radio — offered his perspective on the supermodel’s choice of words.
“Any parent could say that and it could be lost in translation in the words,” he said.
Wahlberg said he met up with Bündchen and her two children while she was waiting for her husband, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, to emerge from the locker room at U.S. Bank Stadium. They were also with Brady’s 10-year-old son, Jack, whose mother, Bridget Moynahan, is Wahlberg’s Blue Bloods co-star and good friend.
The actor said he “goofed around” with Jack for a bit before talking to Brady and Bündchen’s five-year-old daughter Vivian.
“She was literally smiling through her tears, and she said, ‘It’s OK because we won a bunch of times, and the other team never won, and we should be happy for them,’” Wahlberg recounted. “Whatever Gisele said to the kids, they got the message the right way. Anyone who’s criticizing her — and a lot of people are criticizing — it’s like, ‘Why are you going to pick on a mom?’
“I never heard her say, ‘We let them win because we’re so great and they’re so terrible,’” he continued. “That’s not what she said. What she said is ‘It’s their turn. We have to be happy for them and we have to be OK with it.’”
Wahlberg called Bündchen’s words a “perfect message.”
