Fuku comes to Seaport this summer, and Frank Pepe’s pizza heads to Burlington
Coming soon: New York’s Momofuku Restaurant Group empire will expand to Boston this summer with fried-chicken restaurant Fuku at the One Seaport building (43 Northern Ave. at Fan Pier Boulevard), marking its first foray into the city.
Super-chef impresario David Chang currently stars in the Netflix series “Ugly Delicious.” In the show, Chang — who runs noodle bars, restaurants, and soft-serve parlors from Toronto to Washington, D.C. — globe-trots in search of good food and the meaning behind it. What is authenticity? And does it matter?
Chang’s maiden endeavor joins New York-to-Seaport exports like Luke’s Lobster and Shake Shack.
“For our first location outside of New York City, we wanted to find a city close enough to [headquarters] so that our corporate chef, Stephanie Abrams, could spend a significant amount of time there,” says a rep.
Also key? Boston’s “unique culinary culture” and “incredible dining scene.” Hey, thanks, Fuku! Look for Boston-specific menu items, plus fried chicken sandwiches and slushies.
(In other New York news, Manhattan’s Magnolia Bakery — whose husky cupcakes were once a “Sex and the City” plot point — opened on March 29 at Quincy Market. The shop had lines out the door on its inaugural morning, according to on-the-scene Globe reports, so maybe wait a couple of days before popping in for your sweet fix.
New Haven icon Frank Pepe’s Pizzeria, beloved for its crackly white clam pie, has Boston expansion plans. A Burlington shop is poised to join a Chestnut Hill branch, says Gary Bimonte, Frank Pepe’s grandson and a restaurant owner. Frank Pepe’s submitted an application to open at the Burlington Mall (75 Middlesex Turnpike), where Uno Pizzeria & Grill closed earlier this year.
“There’s a lot of people who left Connecticut and live in the Boston area, and they want our pizza. We thought it was a good thing to do. We opened up in Chestnut Hill, and it took us by surprise how successful we were. A lot of people moved from Connecticut to Massachusetts for jobs,” says Bimonte, noting that the pizzeria doesn’t typically opt for mall locations but will make an exception again in this case, thanks to the high visibility and demand.
Bimonte says more Boston-area locations are (hopefully) in the works.
Finally, the Revere Hotel Boston Common (200 Stuart St. at Charles Street) will launch Rebel’s Guild restaurant this month, serving turkey pot pie, deviled eggs with lobster, lobster fritters with honey butter, Yankee pot roast, and smoked duck crostini.
