With all the hype surrounding Kyrie Irving and his on-screen alter-ego Uncle Drew, it’s not surprising that the new Wheaties box featuring the Boston Celtic is in short supply around Boston.
If you want one, it might be quicker to shell out $20, which is what one of the boxes was going for on eBay last week.
While Wheaties frequently puts professional athletes on its boxes, this is the first time in recent memory that it has featured two different personas on the same box. Irving is in his Celtics uniform on one side; on the other, he’s dressed up as Uncle Drew in his Harlem Buckets gear.
“Uncle Drew,” which opened to mixed reviews in June, features Irving as the beloved title character, who first dribbled his way into the spotlight in Pepsi Max commercials in 2012. Uncle Drew is a white-haired former basketball player whose sole purpose is to wow younger players or “youngbloods,” despite his elderly getup. Irving was filming “Uncle Drew” when he learned of his transfer from the Cavaliers to the Celtics.
In collaboration with Nike, Wheaties also released 100 limited edition Kyrie 4s, an Uncle Drew orange version of Irving’s signature sneakers, from his popular line of gear. In May, Irving took to Instagram to unveil his pair of the special sneakers. While Irving was out with an injury, Jayson Tatum sported the hard-to-miss orange shoes on the court during a game against the 76ers.
While the hype for the sneakers was expected, the cereal boxes were also hot purchases. Wheaties cereal is currently out of stock at a number of area Targets, and one of the eBay options, watched by multiple people in the past few days, had an asking price of $29.99.Lillian Brown can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org.
