It’s obvious at first bite that Maine Fresh seafood pies have a lot going for them: generous quantities of Maine seafood, locally grown vegetables, and buttery whole-wheat crusts, all made from recipes developed by noted chef Sam Hayward of Portland’s Fore Street restaurant. Less obvious is that pie sales support the work of the Cobscook Community Learning Center, helping address the issues endemic to rural Washington County, the state’s poorest. “We have a genuine social mission, and we can be a model for others, attaching a social mission to a for-profit business,” says Jeff Johnson, CEO of Cobscook Bay Co., maker of the pies. These savory rounds taste good and do good. Available at Hannaford supermarkets, Whole Foods Markets, and Marshall’s Fenway Farm Stand, 1345 Boylston St., Boston, 617-375-6100. JANE DORNBUSCH
