When Betty Crush of Freeport, Maine, developed a series of health issues, she stepped back to re-evaluate her diet. Crush began to create tasty energy bars made of nuts, seeds, and fruits that soon had people around her clamoring for a bite. “I just started making them for everybody that wanted one, even though they didn’t have allergies,” she says. “They just wanted something that tasted good.” In 2007, she started Mom’s Organic Munchies in her own small kitchen to sell her vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, refined-sugar-free energy bars and cookies. Crush’s favorite is the top-selling almond sea salt bar, but other flavors include espresso, goji berry pistachio, and a chocolate skinny mint cookie for dessert. Even the pickiest eater can find something to rave about. Available at Life Alive Cafe, 765 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge, 617-354-5433, and Cambridge Naturals, 23 White St., Cambridge, 617-492-4452, or go to www.momsorganicmunchies.com.
