Granola that’s Pure Gold
“People get hooked on it,” Laurie Cochran says of her Pure Gold Granola ($13 for 12 ounces), which she started selling a year ago after more than a decade of giving out samples to friends, family, and fund-raisers. Her nutritious version of the now ubiquitous cereal mix is sweetened with maple syrup and a hint of organic sucanat. “When I started making it, people would start to jockey for who was going to bring home the granola,” says the entrepreneur. The name Pure Gold, explains the former finance marketing director, indicates the fact that she uses no artificial ingredients or preservatives; and she bakes each batch until it achieves “a nice golden color.” She started experimenting with recipes 15 years ago. It took her three years to perfect her current mix, made up of 50 percent nuts and seeds (pumpkin and sunflower), oats, millet, spices, pure Vermont maple syrup, and Georgia pecans. Cochran hand-mixes and bakes roughly 300 bags every month, with help from her chief taster, husband James. “I was looking for breakfast food that would keep me full all morning,” says Laurie Cochran, which it does.
