Forget brown paper packages tied up with string. The best kind of mail is a brightly trimmed box of baked goods from Harvard Sweet Boutique. Started in 2007, the Hudson bakery was exclusively an online business until last November, when owner Susan George opened a brick-and-mortar location just off the town’s main drag. The bakery offers a large selection of its online wares as well as a few test-kitchen specialties like flaky “pop tarts” filled with preserves or chocolate ($2.50), cupcakes in flavors such as carrot cake topped with slivers of candied carrot ($3), giant whoopie pies ($2.50), Boston Strong cookies ($5, proceeds to One Fund Boston), and savory soups and tarts ($4.95-$7.95). The company already had gluten-free options such as raspberry brownies ($3.50, in store) and recently developed a line of low-carb treats. If the drive out to Hudson is not an option, you can still order online. There are as many packaging options (with color-coordinated boxes, bows, and fillings) as there are baked goods to choose from (Mother’s Day selections range from $13 to $59). Snail mail never tasted so sweet.  Harvard Sweet Boutique, 25 South St., Hudson, 978-562-5938, www.harvardsweetboutique.com. KATHERINE HYSMITH
