Pumpkin Pie Soda: A soda for the season

The handcrafted soda maker Maine Root, based in Portland and run by brothers Mark and Matt Seiler, pays homage to autumn with Pumpkin Pie Soda. Sounds dubious — and there’s no pumpkin in this seasonal offering — but the flavors come through in spices like allspice, ginger, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Sweetened with Fair Trade organic cane sugar, the orange-colored drink tastes like spiced cream soda. Says Mark Seiler, “While adults are drinking pumpkin beer, this soda gives kids something special.” Or drink it yourself, as a mixer with a jigger of spiced rum. Available at Harvest Co-op, 580 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge, 617-661-1580, and 57 South St., Jamaica Plain, 617-524-1667; Dedham Square Country Store, 626 High St., Dedham, 781-326-8944; Wegmans, 9102 Shops Way, Northborough, 508-936-1900; or go to to www.maineroot.com.
