In mid-October, Kitchen Outfitters in Acton expanded into the shop next door. This is the second expansion since the store opened in 2006, and adds about a third more space to the shop and increases its visibility in Acton Woods Plaza. It’s bright and attractive and despite the vast inventory, the space seems surprisingly uncluttered.
Shop owner Willa Breese has penny-candy jars filled with hand-held tools such as spatulas, ladles, and whisks on a long table next to an island of wooden spoons and bowls. Nearby, a handsome French cabinet, once used in an olive oil factory, features ceramics. Breese, who studied pastry making in France, expanded the bakeware so it’s practically a boutique within the shop, offering pans of all shapes and sizes, cooling racks, pastry bags, palette knives, dozens of cookie cutters, and more. Adding to the feeling of openness, there are no boxes in sight. Everything is in full view, inviting shoppers to pick up and hold the merchandise. “Cooks are tactile,” says Breese, who knows this firsthand.
