Fells Market in Wellesley is everything you want from a neighborhood grocery store and then some. You can pick up dinner items, produce, baked goods, and staples, and local kids bike or walk over for sandwiches and snacks. For 35 years, the market has been owned and operated by the Katsikaris family. With the recent passing of both George Katsikaris and his wife, Diane, the couple’s two sons, Peter and Paul, now run the business. Marinated steak tips are a specialty (the “secret” recipe includes gluten-free soy sauce) as are kebabs, steaks, and marinated chicken. Prepared foods, such as mac and cheese, chicken Parm, mashed potatoes, barbecue chicken, and shepherd’s pie, are made in-house. “We’re going from a convenience store to more of a gourmet shop,” says Paul Katsikaris, who also sells Greek yogurt and tzatziki from Sophia’s Greek Pantry in Belmont, and other locally made foods, including Sweet Basil’s pesto, Juniper’s dips, To Die For spreads, and Bonnie’s Jams. All that and wine and beer in this formerly dry town.
