A colander designed for the tiniest grains

oxo

When recipe directions start with the words “rinse and drain,” it helps to have a colander custom made for the job. OXO’s new Rice & Grains Washing Colander ($11.99) is ideal, able to handle even the tiniest grains. The colander looks like a well-designed 2½-quart mixing bowl with easy-grip handles, small draining holes on the bottom, and a spout with more holes. A scalloped base allows air to circulate underneath. As the grains are swirled back and forth, the colander drains like a spring shower; you can see when the water is clear and the grains are clean. Excess water on the bottom is poured off through the spout holes. Available at Duck Soup, Mill Village Shopping Center, 365 Boston Post Road, Sudbury, 978-443-3825; Kitchen Outfitters, Acton Woods Plaza, 342 Great Road, Acton, 978-263-1955; and TAGS Hardware, Porter Square Shopping Center, 29 White St., Cambridge, 617-868-7711.
