Smoke Shop barbecue opening soon, plus other restaurant news
Openings: Tremont 647 chef Andy Husbands will open his 150-seat Smoke Shop barbecue parlor in Cambridge next week (1 Kendall Square). Husbands, who has won many barbecue competitions, will serve whole hogs, brisket, pulled pork, ribs, and fried chicken with a side of something called “sexy gravy.” All this, plus a vast selection of whiskey, and live music Thursday through Sunday.
Mother Juice opens its flagship location in July (291 Newbury St. at Gloucester Street). The busy juice bar originated as a food truck, and now there are two mini Mother Juices, one in Kendall Square and one at the Boston Public Market. Expect a far larger space and a bigger menu: avocado and make-your-own toasts, smoothie bowls, chia seed puddings, and kombucha on tap — plus juices, of course, sipped on a large patio.
Fans of former Bistro du Midi chef Robert Sisca should plan a Martha’s Vineyard jaunt this summer: This week, he opens Garde East in Vineyard Haven (52 Beach Road). The waterfront restaurant has raw oysters, local meats and seafood, and native beers. It’s open for dinner daily and for brunch on Saturday and Sunday.
Visit Somerville’s new Mint Eatery (868 Broadway at Powderhouse Boulevard) for momos (Himalayan dumplings with smoky hot sauce), samosas, and $5.99 kati rolls — miniature Indian roll-ups sliced in half and stuffed with meat curries, cheese, vegetables, and onions. They’re open every day except Sunday.
Temporary Closings: Cambridge’s busy Kimchi Kitchen (847 Cambridge St. at Hunting Street) — home to exceptional ddukbokki and fried rice topped with fried eggs — has closed for repairs. The restaurant plans to reopen later this summer, according to its Facebook page.
Moveable Feasts: No need to travel to retail shops in Hanover, N.H., or to Chestnut Hill for Morano Gelato any longer: Now you can buy it by the pint at Formaggio Kitchen in Cambridge or in the South End.
Summer Lunches: Southie’s Loco Taqueria & Oyster Bar (412 W. Broadway at F Street) launches Friday lunch service through Labor Day weekend. Feast on ceviche, fish tacos, margaritas, and several varieties of guacamole, like pineapple and smoked fish. Lunch starts at 11:30 a.m.
