Energy bars for people who like real food

Riley Moseley

“Original. Wholesome. Local.” That’s what the letters stand for on OWL energy bars. Chewy and densely packed with oats, ground flaxseed, sunflower seeds, peanut butter, dried fruits, raw honey, and dark chocolate, the bars are a power snack (or meal replacement) for when you’re hiking, biking, running, walking — or just hungry in the car. Founder and producer Allison Wright believes you are what you eat, and the former back-country ski guide says, “Food should help us perform at our best.” The bars ($3.99 for 2.7 ounces), including a new second flavor, cherry almond, are gluten-free and dairy-free. Available at Volante Farms, 292 Forest St., Needham, 781-444-2351; American Provisions, 613 E. Broadway, South Boston, 617-269-6100; and Whole Foods Market Fresh Pond, 200 Alewife Brook Parkway, Cambridge, 617-491-0040; or go to www.owlenergybar.com
