You would think that celebrated author Dorie Greenspan, winner of five James Beard awards, doesn’t have much to add to the dozen volumes she’s already written. But in “Everyday Dorie: The Way I Cook,” Greenspan offers a glimpse of her own table. “These recipes, most of which are simple, none of which needs skills beyond basic, turn out dishes that are comforting, satisfying and inviting,” she writes in the book. “I’ve often said that my favorite kind of food is ‘elbows-on-the-table’ — meals that are casual, put people at ease, can sometimes be eaten with your fingers and always encourage guests to linger, sharing stories and passing second helpings. It’s the way I like to feed my family and friends.”
To that end, you’ll find the pretty and satisfying Lower-East-Side-Brunch Tart on the book cover, which combines smoked salmon, cream cheese, red onion, and cherry tomatoes; a umami burger, in which sauteed mushrooms with oyster sauce and soy sauce are mixed into the ground beef; dark-chocolate puddings you’ll want to pull right out of Ellen Silverman’s beautiful photo (she shot the entire book and it’s all enticing); and more.
Greenspan, a columnist for The New York Times Magazine, will be in Boston the first week of December to talk about her book. She lives half the year in Paris, has cooked with that city’s top bakers and chefs, and has her own stories to tell. On the page, she’s knowledgeable, warm, funny, and delightful. Same in person.
