Thank heavens: The Sky Bar is coming back. The candy bar, produced by Revere’s New England Confectionery Co. — better known as Necco — until it closed last year, will reemerge on shelves by the end of 2019. The bar was known for retro packaging and an unusual four-flavor combination: caramel, vanilla, peanut, and fudge.

The sweet savior is Louise Mawhinney. She owns Duck Soup, a gourmet shop in Sudbury. Mawhinney entered an online auction run by Necco in the wake of its closure and placed a bid for the brand. (She declined to name the price.) To her surprise, she won.

Mawhinney entered her bid on a whim, thinking about customers who would e-mail her, lamenting the loss of their beloved treat.

“My customers were asking, ‘What about the Sky Bar?’ We watched all of it happening, and we went into panic mode,” she says, laughing.

It was an impulse buy — sort of like buying a candy bar in the checkout aisle.

“I went out and walked my dogs at 8 a.m. Then I sat down with a cup of coffee, clicked the link, and registered. The next thing up for sale in that half-hour was Sky Bar. It was a reasonable bid. It wasn’t a stupid bid. And so, within half an hour, I was the owner of Sky Bar. I was stunned to death,” she says.

Still, she’s delighted to revive a piece of candy history, and she’ll work alongside Necco veterans to replicate the treat.

“We have the intellectual property, the name, trademark, and the customer list. Not only do we have the recipe, we have Jeff Green, the vice president of R&D for Necco. He has every recipe going back to 1938,” she says.

She and Green will produce the bar in smaller batches and for a slightly higher price — it might not end up on convenience store shelves, for instance — but the taste you know and love will remain the same. She’s in the process of sourcing equipment and finding a production facility close to her Sudbury store.

In business since 1971, Duck Soup is known for proprietary coffee blends and curated wine and cheese selections, plus kitchenware, craft liquors, international foods, and a wide selection of chocolate and candy — and, soon, Sky Bars.

“Nobody wanted to see it die,” she says.
