Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana arrived at the Shops at Chestnut Hill almost four years ago with fanfare and an hours-long wait for a table. Lovers of the original location in New Haven came in droves for the coal-fired pies. These days Frank Pepe’s grandsons run the business, and every year they select, in a blind taste test, freshly harvested tomatoes from Italy for sauce. Now the chain is selling what they use in the restaurant in 28 oz. cans ($3.50 each; $10 for three) — whole peeled tomatoes in a lush tomato puree with basil labeled Genuine Italian Tomatoes. Crush the tomatoes and add a few pinches of salt for a pizza or pasta. You might not be able to turn out crust with the char like Pepe’s, but the sauce will be fresh tasting and delicious.
