The pleasures of Anne Lee’s elegant cakes are not only in their taste, but also in their airy texture. Lee recently opened Brit Bakery in Cambridge in a low brick building set back on Concord Street. She bakes beautiful special-occasion cakes swathed in buttercream. Using organic and natural ingredients, Lee also turns out breakfast pastries and desserts that are not overly sugary. Berries enhance sweetness. With the help of pastry chef Rachel Han, who previously baked at Top Of The Hub restaurant in Boston, the two fill the display case with blueberry lemon, orange cranberry, and chive cheddar scones ($1.85 to $2.15), and rich chocolate chip, cranberry pecan, and oatmeal raisin cookies (90 cents). Petite muffins ($2.75 to $2.95) are offered, including one named Soft Angel, a spongy vanilla cake with a custardy vanilla cream interior. A mini nut tart is jam-packed with a mix of pistachios, walnuts, hazelnuts, pecans, and almonds, which will linger in the back of your mind once you taste it ($3). A blend of Parmesan, mascarpone, and cream cheese fills another ($2.75). Lee first started a baking business by selling her cakes for catered events and pop-ups. When the storefront became available, once occupied by Violette Bakers, she took the leap. She renovated the space that’s now bright and sunny with warm white walls and a hardwood floor. There are a few stools for sitting and sipping a coffee with your pastry. Self taught, Lee never set out to become a baker, but came to Boston from South Korea 20 years ago to study international relations at Boston University. “We are so happy when we bake,” says Lee, and coined the company motto, “Happy Bakers Smile Makers.”

For Easter, the bakery offers festive cakes ($27 for 6-inch cakes) and cupcakes ($3.50 each) dressed up with pastel chocolate eggs. A vanilla sponge is layered with lemon buttercream; another layered with vanilla buttercream is decorated in a chocolate buttercream basket weave — all lovely desserts to enjoy before the hunt for eggs. 407 Concord Ave., Cambridge, 617-383-9758, www.britbakery.com.
