The number of patients sickened in a nationwide outbreak of fungal meningitis has grown to 245. Nineteen patients have now died.

Two more patients have contracted peripheral joint infections from steroid shots in the knee, hip, shoulder, or elbow.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provided this update Wednesday afternoon of the number of patients affected by the meningitis outbreak linked to a Framingham pharmacy compounding company. New England Compounding Center has shut down as a result of the outbreak and is under investigation by state and federal health officials and the US Attorney’s Office in Boston.
