Court approves $325 million settlement against Pfizer

US District Court Judge Patti B. Saris on Monday approved a $325 million settlement in the decadelong class action lawsuit against Pfizer and Warner-Lambert Co., which is now owned by Pfizer, for illegally marketing the epilepsy drug Neurontin. The plaintiffs, which included health insurers and government payers, sued the drug maker for improperly promoting the drug for a variety of conditions, including pain, bipolar disorder, and migraines. At the time, Neurontin was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration to treat only adult epilepsy and post-herpetic neuralgia. Saris awarded plaintiffs’ attorneys in the case 28 percent of the total, or $91 million.
