You wouldn’t think a product of Western Massachusetts would know much about surfing, right? Wrong. Take a moment to Google former Pittsfield resident Garrett McNamara and check out the 100-foot wave he surfed off the coast of Nazaré, Portugal. McNamara, who lived in the Berkshires until his family moved to Hawaii when he was 11, set the previous world record in 2011 by surfing a 77-foot wave in the same place. “Thank you all for your support,” McNamara, 45, tweeted afterward. “It means the world to me. Today was an awesome day and so fun to be out there.”
