Wednesday’s appearance by pioneering rapper-actor Ice-T at UMass-Boston was billed as “live and uncensored” — and it sure was. Speaking to an overflow crowd of students and staff in the Campus Center Ballroom, Ice-T told entertaining (and wildly profane) tales about growing up gangster — “We’d rob a bank on our way home from robbing a bank” — before finally getting a record deal and going straight. “Drugs and crime, that [expletive] is for suckers,” he said. “I don’t have to do that no more. I got a job.” The subject of intense controversy in the early ’90s after releasing a track called “Cop Killer,” Ice-T said he doesn’t have a problem with the police today. (That’s good, because he was flanked by two campus officers Wednesday.) And he doesn’t worry about people who dismiss rap music. “Just cuz you don’t understand [expletive] doesn’t mean it’s stupid,” he said. “It just means you don’t understand [expletive].” If Ice-T’s wife, Coco, was there, we didn’t see her, and she’s hard to miss.
