Beverly’s Angie Miller awaits ‘American Idol’ vote

The top 10 “American Idol” contestants faced the public vote for the first time as finalists on Wednesday night’s show and among them was Angie Miller of Beverly.

The 18-year-old Miller — who notes Jessie J and Beyonce as her biggest influences — has been a favorite early on in the 12th season of the Fox singing competition, with judges Keith Urban, Nicki Minaj, Randy Jackson, and Mariah Carey praising her poise, vocals, and original songwriting talent.

In her first session with “Idol” mentor and music industry mogul Jimmy Iovine Wednesday, he echoed the positive feedback but warned that he felt she sometimes came off like a beauty pageant contestant when getting very passionate with a song.

The theme for the evening was the music of previous “American Idol” winners and Miller earned high marks for her assured rendition of “I Surrender.” (Inaugural “Idol” winner Kelly Clarkson sang the Celine Dion ballad in the first season of the show.)

Urban said that he loved Miller’s ability to take a song from any era and make it current and that she knocked it out of the park. Minaj gushed over Miller’s dress and overall styling, said that her vocals “personified perfection,” and that she believes the teen is a superstar. Jackson deployed his well-worn catchphrase that Miller is “in it to win it.” And Carey simply proclaimed that she was “stellar.”

Miller will learn on Thursday’s show if the judge’s opinions were shared by the voting public and if she will advance to next week’s competition.
