Judy Blume’s son brings ‘Eyes’ to Vineyard

Living legend Judy Blume is big. Huge. She’s sold more than 80 million books, including classics such as “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” “Blubber,” and “Tiger Eyes.” But the film version of “Tiger Eyes” — which was officially released earlier this month — is a tiny project. It was made by Blume’s son, Lawrence, who’s still trying to get it to its core audience — presumably, fans of Judy’s — through video on demand and on iTunes, even if it’s not playing at theaters in their towns. Slowly but surely, theaters are asking for the film. “We’re starting to get bookings pretty much every day,” Lawrence told us, of the slow burn of “Tiger Eyes.” But many people still don’t know the movie exists. Lawrence says that some of the best publicity so far has been his mom’s Twitter account. The author has almost 100,000 followers, many of whom grew up with her books. Lawrence said he believes his mom is a natural tweeter because she’s not simply promoting her products. She likes to simply chat with her followers because she mostly works alone. “She just got completely addicted,” Lawrence said of the social media tool. On Thursday, Lawrence Blume will be on Martha’s Vineyard, where he spends part of his year, to screen “Tiger Eyes” at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center on behalf of the Martha’s Vineyard Film Society. He’ll answer questions after the movie, which will be playing at the center through the weekend. The movie stars Willa Holland (above) as Judy’s famous character Davey. Holland is best known for the television shows “Arrow” and “Gossip Girl.”
