Dan Kennedy taking a look at newspaper buyers

Why is Red Sox owner John Henry getting into the newspaper business? That’s among the questions Dan Kennedy hopes to answer in a book he’s set to write for the University Press of New England. Kennedy, a media critic/commentator who writes the Boston-based Media Nation blog, confirmed to us Tuesday that he has a deal in the works to write about the new breed of newspaper owners. He said the book’s focus will be on Henry, who’s buying The Boston Globe, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, the new owner of The Washington Post, and Aaron Kushner, who recently bought the Orange County Register in California. “I want to look at these three owners and try to get a handle on how they’re trying to put the newspaper business on sustainable ground,” said Kennedy, an assistant professor of journalism at Northeastern. “My hope and expectation is that I’ll be able to talk with John Henry and Aaron Kushner. Bezos? Who knows. He’s notoriously reluctant to give interviews, but I’ll try.” Kennedy’s current book, “The Wired City,” is about new types of hyper-local community journalism.
