World Series winner David Ortiz joins the first three responders to the Boston Marathon bombings on the Nov. 11 cover of Sports Illustrated. The new cover, which was shot by SI photographer Joe McNally at Fenway Park on Nov. 1, features the same locals — officers Javier Pagan and Rachel McGuire, and detective Kevin McGill — who appeared in Boston Globe staff photographer John Tlumacki’s now-iconic image that ran on SI’s cover on April 22. Ortiz — who has been making media rounds after last week’s big win — spoke about Boston law enforcement when he appeared on “Late Show With David Letterman Monday night. He said, of the bombings and the aftermath, “The police did an amazing job; they figured things out so quick.” After Letterman, Ortiz talked more about Boston on Tuesday’s episode of “Live With Kelly and Michael.” He told Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan that his pal Mike Napoli had the worst of the team beards. “I will say the more, um, all over the place kind of type, my boy, Napoli. . . . It looked like he came from the Bible or something.” Ortiz has been joined by his wife, Tiffany, during the team’s celebratory events. The couple announced at the beginning of the season that they were calling it quits, but by the fall, they were appearing as a twosome.
