The American Repertory Theater held the first of a series of readings called “Trouble in Mind: Lost Masterpieces From the African American Theater Canon” the other night. Curated by Hilton Als, theater critic for The New Yorker, the series is a joint venture between the ART and the Hutchins Center for African and American Research. The first reading, introduced by Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. and directed by Als and ART artistic associate Shira Milikowsky, was “Wedding Band: A Love/Hate Story in Black and White” by Alice Childress.
