Sports reporter Mike Dowling is leaving Ch. 5

After 28 years, Mike Dowling (right) is done at WCVB-TV, station GM Bill Fine announced Tuesday. Fine said the veteran sports reporter’s last day will be Feb. 21. “Mike is a sports reporting legend in the city. We always felt like we were there — with him — for all the action during the biggest victories of our lifetimes,” WCVB news director Andrew Vrees said in a statement. “The players changed over Mike’s time at ‘SportsCenter 5.’ What didn’t change was Mike’s knowledge of the teams and his unique ability to get the players to trust and open up to him. That’s a true skill.” Dowling, who said he’s leaving to spend more time with his family, has collected numerous awards over his time with the ABC affiliate, including nine AP awards for “Best Sportscast,” and two Edward R. Murrow regional awards for “Best Sports Reporting.”
