Stephen Malkmus has a meal in Allston

Yes, that was former Pavement frontman Stephen Malkmus at Brown Sugar Cafe in Allston on Tuesday. He was there because his band, Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, had a show at the Paradise Rock Club nearby. “It’s all hospitals and schools, and like an Italian family party, all generations are there — very stratified,” Malkmus said of his Boston audience. While in town, Malkmus said he met great young fans at Emerson College (he was interviewed at WERS), and gave special attention to his front-row club audience. “I like checking out people in front — I try to give them a little show. A lot of guitar moves down low. Only they can see silly faces, and certain drooling too.” Malkmus handed out a free shirt to the first person in the crowd who could supply him with a pack of Newport cigarettes. It only took seconds for one to fly into his palm.
