Terri Lyne Carrington drums up some interest in music

Dina Rudick/Globe Staff

Celebrated jazz drummer and composer Terri Lyne Carrington (above) paid a visit Friday to Smith Leadership Academy, a charter school in Dorchester, where she spoke to an assembly of students about her life and career. The Medford native’s personal story is nothing if not inspirational: She received a full scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music when she was just 11, and then went on to work with the likes of Carlos Santana, Stan Getz, Pharoah Sanders, Cassandra Wilson, and David Sanborn, among others. Carrington’s visit was sponsored by the Office of the Arts at Harvard, which also arranged to have her perform at Saturday’s musical tribute to Herbie Hancock at Sanders Theatre.
